Itinerary - Hiking Hot Springs
Your day starts bright and early as you are picked up curbside at your hotel and transported to our headquarters
in Boulder City, near the Hoover Dam. Here, you will check in, meet your Guide, and organize your
gear for the adventure that awaits!
Just below Lake Mead lies Black Canyon; a strikingly beautiful volcanic area. Plants such as creosote, rabbit brush, Mormon tea,
globe mallow, and rock nettle surround you as your journey begins. Jagged canyons reach high into
the sky as you begin your descent into the chasms toward the Colorado River.
The gravel wash narrows and some scrambling is sometimes necessary to maneuver around house-sized boulders. As
you descend nearly 800' in elevation, trickles of water begin to surface and hot springs reveal themselves.
The springs consist of ground water that is heated at depth by contact with molten rock and moves to
the surface through faults at the rate of 400 gallons per minute. The water temperature is between 85 degrees
to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. It is highly mineralized containing chloride, sulphate, sodium, potassium, calcium,
and fluoride.
Enjoy a picnic lunch sheltered by the canyon, or closer to the river on a nice beach. Here you
will spend the day soaking in geothermal pools, relaxing, reading, and just enjoying nature. After
a great day in Black Canyon, you'll make your way 3 miles back up the trail toward civilization.
